George makeup: Hit or miss?

George at Asda have recently completely rebranded all of their beauty products and given them a new modern sleek look but still keeping their prices super affordable, so I was very excited to try out a few bits out for myself! I've actually heard some pretty good reviews already considering the products are from a supermarket brand, so I'm excited to share my own thoughts on some of their new makeup releases with you in this post!

I have been testing out three different types of blush from the range, yes three! I'm so impressed that they have so many formulas of blush for such a new range, so there's definitely something for everyone's preferences..

The first one I tried out is one of their cosmic baked blushes in the shade 'Galaxy' which is a really pretty shimmery pink colour. This was priced at £5, so one of the more expensive items they sell but with that being said you get a huge amount of product in the pan, this is definitely going to last me for a long time, especially since you hardly need any product on the brush to build up the colour at all!

Formula wise, I really like the product it's packed with pigment and adds a gorgeous shimmery blush to the cheeks without being powdery at all. I always seem to prefer baked blushes and bronzers myself, as I think they add such a lovely healthy glow to the skin.. and this definitely does that! I can definitely see why this one was a little pricer than some of their other new blushes, and I really can't fault it for the price!

(Top: Pretty in pink. Bottom: Galaxy. )

The second blush I tried was one of their 'Blush Queen' blushes in the shade 'Pretty in pink' (love the name! ) and this one retails for just £3.50, so quite a little bit cheaper than the baked blush. This one is a really pretty coral pink shade, and I just love the colour of this one.. it's definitely a shade that's going to be perfect to wear when summer comes around!

This one has a matte finish, and it adds such a pretty coral tone to the cheeks which definitely gives the skin more of a healthier summery look! I've also found both of the powder blushes to be surprisingly long wearing too for price, which I was really impressed with - It's been even more longwearing than one of my high end blushers which is crazy! I think this one is such a good cheaper alternative to try if your on a budget, for just £3.50 it's a bargain and again you get a lot of product in the pan too.. so it would definitely not be needing replacing anytime soon!

The last blush I tried out was their soft touch blush stick in the shade 'Pretty in pink' just like the above in powder form and this one retails for £4. I really don't seem to get on with stick products for blush and highlight, this does look pretty on the cheeks colour wise but formula and finish wise I definitely prefer the first two blushes! I find that these kind of blushes just seem to wipe my foundation away and don't apply well to my skin at all, but that may be my skin type! ( If you have any tips on how to work with these types of blushes then definitely let me know in the comments as it's such a gorgeous colour! )

I actually really like using this duo together, I much prefer a light coverage and natural looking foundation myself and this definitely is exactly that. The only downside is this particular foundation shade (Ivory) is a little too dark for my pale skin but once it's on my face with concealer and bronzer it's a lot harder to notice. Formula wise its not a matte finish at all, and it definitely gives a lovely dewy finish to the skin. I have super dry skin myself, so this finish is perfect for me! It does give a light coverage, but definitly not enough to fully cover any blemishes or big patches of redness, but thats nothing a good concealer won't sort out!

The pressed powder is definitely more my colour though and its in the shade 'Light', I've been reaching for this a lot lately and I've found that it sets my foundation in really well - the powder costs just £2.50 too, so a real bargain. The only downside for me is that there is quite a lot of fall out in the pan, which definitely wastes quite a bit of product but for £2.50 I can't complain! One of the best things I love about this combo is how long lasting they are for the price, they easily last a good 7-8 hours before they start to fade a little - which I would have never expected for a supermarket brand.

In the new range they've even brought out their own contour and highlight sticks, which I was very excited to try! Firstly, the highlight stick: Formula wise its so creamy but colour wise its so yellow/orange toned that there's no way I could make it work for me. This is their only shade at the moment, but hopefully they'll bring out a paler one soon as I really do like the formula. Maybe if you have a darker skin this may work, but I think it just looks such an odd colour for a concealer!

The contour stick however, I love! At first I was unsure and thought it was way too dark for me but once blended out well it gives a lovely definition to the cheeks. These are both just £3 again, so super cheap and I will definitely consider rebuying the contour stick when it runs out! Most days I skip contour and just use bronzer, but I've really liked using this lately - it's really easy and quick to blend out too because of the creamy formula, this is definitely a great cheaper option worth trying if you love contouring!

(Top: Foundation. Middle: Contour. Bottom: highlight )

I of course couldn't do a review without trying out one of their eyeshadow palettes, they have a few available but this one is there Nudes palette, which comes with 8 beautiful shades that are a mix of mattes and shimmers. I have mixed opinions on this one but overall really like it, the shimmers I find are gorgeous and so easy to work with. I found that the darker matte shades are quite hard to blend on the eyes - it's a shame as the shimmery shades and lighter matte shades really are so pretty!

The palette retails for £6, which is a great price for 8 shades. I was actually surprised at how long wearing the shadows are too and that's without an eyeshadow primer or setting spray, so for £6 I think it's definitely a palette worth trying! I've definitely been surprised at how long wearing most of the products have been, that's the one area cheaper brands seem to lack in usually, but that's definitely not the case with George!

I was so excited to see they had brought out a highlight palette too, I mean who doesn't love adding highlight to a look? The palette includes four different shades, which I think are very versatile and I'm glad that there is definitely a shade for every skin tone in here. The 'lustre' shade is perfect for us pale skin girls, and it gives the skin such a pretty glow - it looks gorgeous in the inner corners of the eyes too! I've also tried using the 'Glow' shade on my cheeks and it makes for a lovely blush, so it's definitely a handy multi-purpose palette.

I really like the formula of all of the shades, they are not powdery at all and apply beautifully. Another bonus is that they are pretty well long lasting too, it will definitely last you a good 5-6 hours before it looses it's full capacity and needs topping up. This was by far my favourite out of the selection of products I've tried, and for £6 I think this is the perfect dupe for lots of high end palettes!

I love testing out different mascaras, this particular one is their 'Va Va volume' mascara and it retails for just £3, which is an absolute steal of a price for a mascara these days. For me this one is quite volumising but it doesn't seem to give the lashes much length or curl at all. Volume wise I really like it, and it's not clumpy at all either - it's such a shame it's not as lengthening as that's definitely what I look for in a mascara!

This is actually probably my least favourite of the bits I've been trying, I don't hate it but it's definitely not something I would buy again personally myself, but if you prefer volume over length then it's definitely worth a try for just £3, they also have a few more mascaras aimed for lengthening and curling the lashes, so it's great to see they have a variety of finishes to suit everyone's tastes. I've actually read some pretty good reviews on the lengthening mascara, so I'll definitely consider picking that one up next time I'm in store!

I tend to stay away from liquid liners myself because I am the worst at applying eyeliner, especially when I'm in a hurry! Their line and define eyeliner though has been amazing for me, the brush is super thin which makes it so easy to apply the product, even for someone who's terrible at eyeliner, like myself! So this one definitely gets a big thumbs up from me, and for just £3 I will definitely be buying this one again.. I was so shocked that I liked this one so much, as I really struggle with liquid liners but this one is honestly so easy to work with as it's got such a precise brush!

Another reason I stay away from liquid eyeliner is that they are prone to smudging, however this one seems to dry down pretty fast and I haven't had a problem with regards to that so far! I will be interested to see how it holds up in the heat abroad, as it really doesn't budge once it's on my eyes in our UK weather!

You all know by now I'm a sucker for pretty nail polish, so I was very excited to try two shades out from the range..

The first shade I tried out was their 'Rage' polish which has a long lasting finish and this one I can't fault, it lasts a good 4 days before small chips start to appear - which I think is pretty good for a supermarket nail polish. Their long lasting polishes are just £1.50 which I think is such an affordable price, although the bottle for this one is pretty small compared to most I own! For such a cheap price I wasn't expecting much finish wise, so I was definitely pleasantly surprised with this one - it has an almost gel like finish, which I really like!

The next shade I tried was 'Untamed' which is a really pretty pink colour and claims to have a gel finish, and I just didn't seem to get on with this one - the formula seemed to be much thinner than the first finish and it really didn't seem to last long on my nails either. This finish is actually more expensive too, priced at £3 - it does have a much bigger bottle but formula wise I really didn't like this one at all, I just think its way too thin for a nail polish and it's a shame as its such a pretty colour! So.. if you're looking into trying one, I would definitely recommend the long lasting finish over the gel finish for sure as its amazing for the price and so much better quality wise, I will definitely be picking up a few more shades to try next time I'm in store!

Lastly, are the lipsticks and I have definitely been pleasantly surprised with these three for the price. I've tried out a few different formulas and I've been really impressed with them all, I have tried out so many different lipstick brands over the years and these three are definitely some of the best cheaper alternatives I've tried!

I have been trying out two of their satin lipsticks in the shades 'Rare' and 'Hustle'. 'Rare' is a very pretty brown nude shade, and I would say this is such a good dupe for Mac's velvet teddy! This is the kind of shade I wear everyday, and I've been getting so much use out of this one so far. 'Hustle' is a gorgeous bright berry pink shade, it's not a shade I tend to go for myself as its so bright but I think this would look gorgeous throughout the summer months or if you love wearing more colourful shades.

Formula wise, I really do like these - they both feel super creamy on the lips too and not drying whatsoever. The only downside is they do need topping up after about 4 hours wear but I do find that satin and sheer finishes always seem to be less long wearing on my lips, but for just £2.50 I think they are a great bargain and I would love to see what other shades they have in this finish!

I also have been trying out one of their matte lipsticks in the shade 'Smooch' which is a very pretty pink colour! I love the finish of their matte lipsticks, they give a gorgeous matte finish without being too drying on the lips - which is always a big bonus. The only downside is it does need building up on the lips as its definitely a little less pigmented than the satin lipsticks, but two or three quick coats and your good to go!

I've found their matte lipsticks a lot more longwearing than the sheerer lipsticks, this shade seems to last a good 5-6 hours on which is impressive for such an affordable lipstick. There matte lipsticks retail for just £4, so a little pricier than the satin lipsticks but I can see why as they are so much more long lasting. I also love the packaging of their matte lipsticks too, supermarket make up has never looked so pretty!

(Top: Pretty in pink. Middle: Rare. Bottom: Smooch. )

In the photo below I'm actually wearing a full face of George makeup, and I am really impressed! I love how the finish of the foundation looks, I think it gives such a healthy look to the skin without being too dewy either. As you can see the mascara definitely isn't the most lengthening for my lashes, but it's definitely not the worst I've tried either, and it doesn't clump my lashes up at all which is a big bonus for me. I'm wearing the shades 'Smooch' and 'Rare' together on my lips, and I think they create such a pretty pink nude shade, perfect with spring approaching!

Every single item from their new collection is under £6, which I think is so affordable as it's so rare to find prices that low these days even with drugstore makeup brands. I think the lipsticks are an absolute steal, and for £2.50 you just can't go wrong! Quality wise they are obviously not going to be as great as the high end brands, but for a supermarket brand I am really impressed with a lot of their makeup and I can't wait to see what they come out with next!

Overall I am really impressed with the new range, especially considering they are a super market brand. I had mixed thoughts on a few products, but apart from that I think a lot of these would make great cheaper alternatives to the pricier products out there if you're on a budget!

Let me know if you've tried any pieces from the new collection?

* These products were kindly sent to review, however as always all opinions are my own. *

  2. Firstly, well done for doing such a thorough review of every product. I'm amazed by how good you've made everything sound. I'm quite the makeup snob sometimes so I'm always blown away when cheaper stuff is great quality. I'm very pale so I think I'd be nervous to use that contour but I love the style of the pencil x

  12. I don’t really wear makeup but my teenage daughter does and has always said that the George make up is rubbish! I will be showing her this blog and encouraging her to try some. It looks as if the rebrand has brought the look alone more up to date as it didn’t look very appealing before. Thanks for sharing 😃
